During the game, Trainers gain Experience Points (XP or EXP for short) which results in their Levels. Trainer's experience is basically measurement of their progress of gameplay.

Trainer levels
Trainer's Experience Points are measured by Levels. The higher certain Experience Points values Trainers have, the higher level they advance to.
A Trainer can level up to access newer items and more powerful Pokémon. The current maximum level a player can get is 40. Each time players level up, rewards are given to them based on what level has been achieved.
Trainer Level is related to level of owned Pokémon. Obtained Pokémon won't have its level higher than trainer's level. Max level Pokémon is able to power up once trainer achieve the next level, unless Pokémon achieved the general maximum level which also is 40.

Trivia
- Unlike in the main series games, Trainer level is more important than a Pokémon's level in Pokémon GO.
- In fact, Pokémon levels are replaced with CP values that partially informs player about their Pokémon's level.
- As there is a relation between Trainer level and Pokémon level, there are also maximum CP cap for Pokémon:
- Pokémon caught in wild – level 30 (35 if weather boosted) (e.g.: Trainer at level 36 won't encounter Pokémon in the wild with level higher than the Pokémon at level 35);
- Pokémon hatched from Eggs and encountered in Bonus challenge of Raid Battle – level 20 (e.g.: Trainer at level 27 won't hatch Pokémon with level higher than the Pokémon at level 20);
- Pokémon rewarded from Research tasks – level 15 (e.g.: Trainer at level 23 won't be rewarded with Pokémon with level higher than the Pokémon at level 15).
