Primal Reversion is an additional, temporary form specifically for Kyogre and Groudon, similar to Mega Evolution. They have greatly increased Combat Power, but their HP remains the same. Primal Form Pokémon can be assigned as a Buddy Pokémon and used to battle in raids and Gyms or Trainer Battles (including against other players, Team Leaders, Team GO Rocket members, and Challengers in events). However, they cannot be deployed to defend Gyms, traded, powered up or used in GO Battle League matches outside of specific events. When a Pokémon is in its Primal Form, the Trainer receives bonuses.
Reverting a Pokémon to Primal Form[]
In order to undergo Primal Reversion, the Trainer needs Primal Energy of specific Pokémon.
A Pokémon will remain in their Primal Form for 8 hours, after which it will enter its rest period. Only one Pokémon can be in Primal Form (or Mega Evolved) at any particular time. If another Pokémon undergoes Primal Reversion or is Mega Evolved, the previous Primal Pokémon will change back to its standard form and enter its rest period. Pokémon can also undergo Primal Reversion in a raid lobby or Trainer Battle preparation screens. Primal Reverting a Pokémon revives and fully heals it.
The first time a Pokémon undergoes Primal Reversion, it is registered to the Mega & Primal Pokédex.
Primal Energy[]
Primal Energy is a consumable resource that is similar to Pokémon Candy and Mega Energy, as each Pokémon species has specific Primal Energy used to undergo Primal Reversion. Unlike Candy, each individual type of Primal Energy has a max limit of 9999.
Primal Energy for a particular species can be received by battling that specific Pokémon in Primal Raids (a special Tier of Raid Battles), by walking any member of that species as a Buddy Pokémon (unlocked by registering the species in the Mega & Primal Pokédex), or by completing research tasks. Completing a Primal Raid in a shorter time awards more Primal Energy. Primal Energy is given upon completion of the raid and does not require catching the Raid Boss. The data shown below applies to all Primal Raids and all Mega Rayquaza Mega Raids (with the exception of its Elite Raid).
Primal Raid Clear Time | Primal Energy Received |
---|---|
0:00 - 0:30 | 100 |
0:31 - 1:15 | 90 |
1:16 - 2:30 | 80 |
2:31 - 3:45 | 70 |
3:46 - 5:00 | 60 |
Buddy Pokémon can earn 100 Primal Energy per 20 km via walking (along with the usual Candy) if either it or any member of its species has previously undergone Primal Reversion. For example, if Primal Kyogre has been registered in the Pokédex, any Kyogre can earn Primal Energy when assigned as the Buddy Pokémon.
Undergoing Primal Reversion for the first time costs a high amount of Primal Energy. That single Pokémon does not require Primal Energy again to undergo Primal Reversion subsequent times if its rest period is over. Primal Energy can be used to skip the rest period. The Primal Energy cost will gradually decrease along with the rest period drops. Other Pokémon of the same species still require the full cost to undergo Primal Reversion.
Primal Level and bonuses[]
Undergoing Primal Reversion on a Pokémon progresses that specific Pokémon's Primal Level and unlocks increasing bonuses. Only the first Primal Reversion of the specific Pokémon in a day counts towards the Primal Level progression; additional Primal Reversions in a day will still provide Candy and damage boosts, but will not progress that Pokémon's Primal Level.
Damage Boost[]
While in your battle party, Primal Pokémon boost the power of all moves from all other Trainers' Pokémon in Raid Battles by 10% or 30%, depending on what type of move is being used and which Primal Pokémon is giving the boost. Unlike Mega-Evolved Pokémon, this boost applies even if the Primal Pokémon is not the current active Pokémon attacking or if it is fainted.
The boost is not given to the Trainer who brought the Primal Pokémon. In order for that Trainer to receive the boost, another Trainer must bring a Mega-Evolved or Primal Pokémon to the Raid as well.
The 10% boost is upgraded to 30% for all types that are boosted by the specific Primal Pokémon. For Primal Kyogre, this applies to all Water-, Electric- and Bug-type attacks. For Primal Groudon, this applies to all Fire-, Grass- and Ground-type attacks.
Note that these bonuses do not stack if there are multiple Mega-Evolved or Primal Pokémon battling simultaneously; only the higher boost will be applied.
Primal Energy cost reduction[]
Higher Primal Level reduces the Primal Energy cost to skip the rest period. The Primal Energy data shown below refers to the cost required right after the Primal Reversion is over. The cost gradually reduces as time progresses, until it reaches zero with the completion of the rest period.
For example, attempting Primal Reversion at High Level 1 day into the 5 day rest period (80% rest period remaining, 10% energy cost) will cost 8% of the original Primal Energy, and attempting Primal Reversion at High Level 2 days into the 5 day rest period (60% rest period remaining, 10% energy cost) will cost 6% of the original Primal Energy.
Candy bonuses[]
When Primal Kyogre is Primal Reverted, it grants additional XP and Candy when catching Water-, Electric-, and Bug-type Pokémon, or any type Pokémon caught from a Raid Battle. When Primal Groudon is Primal Reverted, it grants additional XP and Candy when catching Fire-, Grass-, and Ground-type Pokémon, or any type Pokémon caught from a Raid Battle. Additionally, High and Max Level Primal Pokémon grant an increased chance to obtain Candy XL when catching a Pokémon of their associated types.
Level | Total times reverted | Rest period (day) | Primal Energy cost of original | Bonuses |
---|---|---|---|---|
Level 0 | 0 | 14 | 100% | 1 bonus catch Candy |
Base Level | 1 | 7 | 20% | 1 bonus catch Candy |
High Level | 7 | 5 | 10% | 1 bonus catch Candy 10% increased Candy XL chance 50 bonus XP |
Max Level | 30 | 3 | 5% | 2 bonus catch Candies 25% increased Candy XL chance 100 bonus XP |
Pokémon cannot be traded while they are currently in their Primal form. If a Pokémon that has previously undergone Primal Reversion is traded, their Primal Level is reset, and that Pokémon is considered to have never undergone Primal Reversion at all.
