Power up is a game mechanic in Pokémon GO that allows Trainers to strengthen their Pokémon by increasing their CP level. It has no effect on the Individual Values.

Powering up Pokémon in the first 40 levels consumes Stardust and Candy with amounts depending on their level. Each Power Up increases the level of a Pokémon by 0.5. Trainer can Power Up their Pokémon to their Trainer levels + 10, which implies that Trainers only need to be level 30 to get a Pokémon at level 40.

Powering up Pokémon to level 41 to 50 consumes Stardust and Candy XL. Similarly, Trainers at level 40 can make their Pokémon reach the max level 50.

Powering up[]

In order to power up desired Pokémon open Pokémon summary page accessible from Pokémon collection page and to do so:

  1. in Map View touch Main Menu button Button Main Menu
  2. touch Pokémon button White Button Pokemon

After opening page of Pokémon selected to power up, there is a Power Up button with amount of required Candy and Stardust displayed next to it. There can be three instances of this button and its label:

  • Power up button is green and tappable if player has a required amount of resources,
  • Power up button is faded and cannot be tapped, and any of displayed resource amounts are red if player has not a required amount of any resources,
  • Power up button is not displayed at all if selected Pokémon reached its maximum level.

Simply by tapping power up button a prompt pop-up will appear to confirm action. After confirming the action a quick animation will run, required number of resources will be consumed and Pokémon's CP and HP will increase.

Since game version 0.173.0, Trainers are able to power up their Pokémon to the desired CP by using all the required Candies and Stardust at once. [1]

Power up costs[]

The cost increase as each Pokémon level increases. Amounts of Candy and Stardust required to next power up is a good way to determine the Pokémon level since this value is hidden.

Lucky Pokémon only require half of the Stardust cost to power up and Purified Pokémon take 10% less of both Stardust and Candy. The discounts can be stacked, thus Lucky Purified Pokémon costs 45% of the origin cost.

The tables below record the power up costs to the next half level.

Trivia[]

  • Before the introduction of level 50 from GO Beyond, Trainer could power up their Pokémon to their Trainer levels + 2 only. Therefore, Trainers needed to be level 38 to max out a Pokémon.
