After the launch of Trainer Battle, Pokémon with more than one Charged Attack can learn an extra attack by paying Stardust and Candies. Both attacks are usable in Gym, Raid, Trainer Battle and against Team GO Rocket. Like Buddy Pokémon mechanic, the costs for different Pokémon are divided into four groups. For most of the cases:
- 1 km Buddy distance = 10,000 Stardust and 25 Candies
- 3 km Buddy distance = 50,000 Stardust and 50 Candies
- 5 km Buddy distance = 75,000 Stardust and 75 Candies
- 20 km Buddy distance = 100,000 Stardust and 100 Candies
Starter Pokémon (and their evolutions) and Baby Pokémon (except Toxel) are common exceptions. They all cost 10,000 Stardust and 25 Candies.
Some Pokémon can only learn one Charged Attack, and as such, are unable to learn the second Charged Attack. Unless they are the Shadow or Purified versions, which they can learn the second Charged Attack if Frustration or Return is still currently learnt.
When a Pokémon with an unlocked second Charged Attack is evolved, the evolved form will also have it unlocked, although it could be a different Charged Attack. Exclusive moves obtained from events always take the position of the first Charged Attack.
