Some Pokémon of the same species may have different forms due to being from different regions, weather conditions or other reasons. The difference between forms of a Pokémon species may only be visual, but they can also present different evolution options, availability, types, moves, base stats and weight and height. Most different forms are recorded in the corresponding Pokédex entry under different Pokémon form switches and have separated weight and height records. Some Pokémon forms can be changed through the Form Change mechanic. Shiny switches on Pokédex are form-related, so the Trainer has to acquire different forms of shiny Pokémon to unlock all switches.

Most Pokémon with gender differences are treated as the same form in game code. However, some of them are treated as separates forms having the male and the female Pokédex entry a separated weight and height records. Also, unlocking one gender shiny switch does not unlock the other one, and trading a unregistered gender, will count as special trade.
Additionally, some Event Pokémon are also considered different forms in the game code. For details and a list, see the explanation here.
Trivia[]
- On May 22nd, 2018, Alolan forms of Pokémon, originally discovered in the Kanto region, were stated to begin to appear in-game.[1]
- Some Event Pokémon also count as different forms rather than costumed Pokémon in game, thus they count towards the Special Trades if one of Trainers don't have such Event Pokémon.
- Shadow Pokémon and Purified Pokémon are treated the same way.
- Pichu, Floette, Minior, Alcremie, Zarude, and Ursaluna have alternate forms in the main series that have not yet been added to the game's code.
